Same-sex marriage licenses issued in Bexar County

Long lines form at County Clerk's Office

SAN ANTONIO – For most same-sex couples waiting in line to get a marriage license Friday, their wait was finally coming to an end.

For Jordan and Donna Reed, the wait spanned nearly five decades. They have been together for 47 years.

"It was uncomfortable and often frightening," Jordan Reed said. "Just unease, complete unease."

Thursday was a different story, she said, "Our primary feeling right now is just delight."

"We had been anticipating this was a possibility and now we're just elated to have this happen," she said.

John Truho and Larry Stern were the first same-sex couple to be issued a marriage license in Bexar County.

"It's just another day in our lives ... other than we're getting married in Texas!" Stern laughed.

"It changed our lives," he said. "I think in public perception more than anything else, because now we can say, ‘This is my husband' and no one can say, ‘No, this is Texas and it's your partner or significant other.'"

Truho and Stern obtained a waiver of the usual 72-hour waiting period and were married in a brief civil ceremony conducted by County Court #7 Judge Jeanne Wright.
