Friends, family say final goodbye to former KSAT anchor Bob Salter

Memorial Service held for Salter, who died last month

SAN ANTONIO – Close friends and family gathered for a memorial service Saturday to remember San Antonio broadcast legend Bob Salter.

"He had a lot of friends and they all had the same picture of Bob. That you are important and it's just his personality," said Forest Salter, Bob Salter's father. "He was outgoing. He would step up and talk to a complete stranger and make them feel comfortable. That's sort of the guy he was."

Bob Salter started his San Antonio career at KENS-TV before joining the KSAT 12 news team.

Bob Salter, along with Karen Gallagher, Meteorologist Steve Browne and sports anchor Greg Simmons, brought KSAT 12 News to No. 1 in the mid-1990s. The station's newscast has mostly stayed at the top of the ratings since then.

Bob Salter left KSAT after a decade to pursue his passion of flying.

He eventually flew critical and lifesaving missions for the Air Evac Lifeteam out of Kerrville.

Bob Salter got other people into flying as well, including Simmons.

"That's what he injected in my life and that's why I love what I do," said Simmons. "Not just on the air, but in the air, flying. He got me involved in flying and being a pilot and I will be forever grateful for that."

"He was very dynamic," said Forest Salter. "Everything he did was all out there, everything, you know. If it was playing baseball in the backyard. He was always the loudest kid on the block."

Bob Salter died in his sleep last month after a long bike ride. His ashes will be spread at an air park. He was 61.
