Thousands head to Leon Valley's Rimkus Park to celebrate Independence Day

Music, games, food, fireworks attract thousands to KSAT-sponsored event

SAN ANTONIO – The weather cooperated just in time for a gigantic KSAT-sponsored Fourth of July celebration at Raymond Rimkus Park in Leon Valley, where thousands came to celebrate America in red, white and blue.

One of them was Luke Stich, 9, who came to town from Del Rio to celebrate.

"I'm here visiting my grandma for the Fourth of July," he said.

He came with a couple of favorite things in mind. First were food and games.

There were 26 craft and food vendors scattered around the park offering fun games and delicious eats.

Next on Luke's list was the parade. The 21st Annual Leon Valley Fourth of July Parade started at 10 a.m. Saturday. Fire trucks, bands, clowns and "SA Live" hosts Jeff Roper and Fiona Gorostiza cruised down the street, lined with waving flags.

"I just think it's great that we can celebrate a country in which there's still freedom allowed. So it means a lot to me to come out and celebrate," said Air Force veteran Al Lopez.

Lopez said while the food and the music are fun, it's important to remember what the Fourth of July is all about.

"The different liberties that we have that a lot of countries don't get to have," Lopez said. "Those are things sometimes we tend to take for granted. But we should never take it for granted. Those are things people have shed their blood for."
