SAPD holds fundraiser for officer's family

Officer Leroy Diaz died of cancer July 1

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department held a fundraiser Friday to raise money for the family of one of its own who died from cancer.

Officer Leroy Diaz died July 1 and leaves behind a wife and a 4-year-old son.

Friday's barbecue fundraiser was held at the Central Substation downtown.

Police Chief Anthony Trevino said at a time such as this, it's all about the family and showing support for those in need.

"Really, it's about the celebration of his life, and it's a strong showing of support for public safety. Not only for police and fire, but for a lot of members of the community to show support," Trevino said.

Diaz joined the department in 2008. Before that, he was in the U.S. Marine Corps and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Iraq.

He was 31 years old.
