SAN ANTONIO – Parks across the city of San Antonio got big makeovers Saturday as volunteers celebrated It's My Park Day and National Parks and Recreation Month.
Victoria and Abraham Guadiano enjoy at Woodlawn Lake Park multiple times a week.
"I just love Woodlawn," Victoria Guadiano said.
So when she sees litter in her favorite park, Victoria Guadiano only has one word to describe it.
"It's ugly," she said, crinkling her nose.
Woodlawn and 11 other San Antonio parks were in need of a little improvement, so 200 volunteers showed up to pitch in.
"It's just nice. It helps pick up," Abraham Guadiano said as he helped paint a worn-out stair railing.
At each park, volunteers had different activities.
"For Woodlawn, it's going to be painting and litter pickup. Brackenridge, it's mulching. Medina River Natural Park, they're going to be doing some weed removal, and (the) same at Hardberger, (as well as) some invasive weed removal. All different things," said San Antonio Parks and Recreation Volunteer Coordinator Gabriela Tello.
She was thrilled to see so many people volunteering to clean up their parks.
"It's a great way for the community to connect with their parks and so (it's) giving back to the community while feeling great, making the parks shine. That's always a great win-win for everybody," Tello said.
