SAN ANTONIO – It may seem like the middle of summer, but kids go back to school in less than a month. And when it comes to safety, it's something school administrators think about all year.
A company called School Guard Glass was in San Antonio this week to demonstrate its product designed to keep intruders out of schools.
School guard glass was designed in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting.
Its aim is to keep intruders out as long as possible, at a cost way below bullet-proof glass.
In the demonstration, it took several people swinging a bat more than 200 times to penetrate the glass.
"The goal is to fit in every door, to be cost effective and to prevent forced entry for 4-6 minutes because that's the average response time for first responders in the U.S. so that's our goal," said School Guard Glass president D. Foster Goodrich.
And while no districts here in San Antonio are currently using the School Guard Glass product, some districts, like the Northside Independent School District do have other bullet-resistant security glass in place.
NISD's Ellison Elementary uses it in its security lobby. That's where individuals must present credentials before being buzzed into the school. Eventually all NISD elementary schools will have those lobbies.
But beyond safer glass and school police officers, the district says there's another element to keeping kids safe at school.
"We schools cannot do it by ourselves, we need moms and dads and community folk to always be the eyes and ears, to let us know about the potential threats they see in the community," said NISD communications director Pascual Gonzalez.
