SAN ANTONIO – Along with joy and good tidings, the holidays are bringing changes and the need for careful attention to San Antonio residents when it comes to having their trash picked up.

City of San Antonio solid waste crews will be operating on a holiday schedule for the next two weeks.

There will be no trash pickup service on Christmas or New Year’s Day. The schedule change will affect residents whose trash is regularly picked up on Thursdays and Fridays.

“Residents who have pickups on those days have to remember to slide forward one day,” said Tiffany Edmonds, spokeswoman for the Solid Waste Department.

The crews will be making the usual Thursday pickups on Wednesday and the Friday pickups on Thursday.

In addition, the city is asking people to help lighten the load a bit for those crews by putting everything in its proper place.

Christmas celebrations, complete with gifts, can generate extra trash. While most food items still belong in the brown containers designated for garbage, there are some items that can be recycled.

“Things like giftwrapping paper, that can go into your blue cart. All you have to do is make sure it's not a metallic paper or anything with the glitter on it,” Edmonds said. “The same thing with bags, if they're paper bags."

Christmas trees, however, will have their own day at the dumps and should not be placed at the curb.

Edmonds said the city will set up drop off locations for Christmas trees and announce the dates and times for that activity. People will also be able to take their discarded Christmas trees to city waste disposal sites.
