Man killed in Highway 281 crash identified

Daniel Chavez-Martinez, 40, dies near Borgfeld Road

SAN ANTONIO – A 40-year-old man was killed in a crash on Highway 281 North near Borgfeld Road early Tuesday morning.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Daniel Chavez-Martinez.

The crashed happened shortly before 6 a.m. just outside the Trinity Oaks subdivision, where the victim lived.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office investigators said Chavez-Martinez was attempting to cross over to the southbound lanes of Highway 281 when his pickup was hit by another truck.

“(He) was trying to make a left out here at the entrance to this subdivision. There is no light and they collided,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Rosanne Hughes said.

Chavez-Martinez had to be cut from the wreckage. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital, where he died.

The driver of the other pickup also suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Hughes said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Hughes said a third driver hit some of the debris from the crash with his SUV, but he was not hurt.

After the crash, sheriff’s deputies shut down the main lanes of northbound Highway 281 to allow the helicopter to land and investigators to collect evidence.  The closure remained in effect for several hours, causing morning traffic to back up all the way to Loop 1604 at one point.
