FLORESVILLE, Texas – A man was shot and killed Saturday morning after he tried to burglarize a building, according to Floresville police.
Police said the shooting was reported around 6 a.m. at a building on C Street.
The Floresville police chief said the intruder broke into the building and the owner confronted him.
"I’ve been in law enforcement here for 22 years,” Police Chief Lorenzo Herrera said. “We've never dealt with anything as far as an intruder getting shot and killed."
The chief said the owner and the intruder began fighting, ending with the owner shooting and killing the intruder.
“From what we gather is that he might have gained entry through the rear door. (We) think he had a key to the door," Herrera said.
Herrera would not elaborate on how or why the suspect had a key.
The building is a used goods store in the front with a living space in back. Police said they suspect that the intruder was responsible for another burglary at the location on Thursday.
Police have not yet released the identity of the man killed, but say he is a local resident in his early 30s.
The owner of the building was shaken up by the experience and checked out by EMS but was OK.
Texas Rangers will take over the investigation.
