New Braunfels officer awarded for babysitting skills while woman has baby

Eric Ceullar took care of 2-year-old while mom, dad at hospital

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A New Braunfels police officer was honored Thursday after he was called upon to use his family training, cooking and parenting, more so than his police training.

Officer Eric Ceullar had just gone on duty when he was dispatched, along EMS, to the home of the Amy Agnese. She was going into labor while her husband, Michael, was working at a 5K running event.

Michael got that important text and then tried to call Amy, but she did not answer. While she was in an ambulance on her way to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels, Cuellar finally answered Amy’s phone.

“I've got your son here with me, your wife's in labor she is on her way to the hospital," Cuellar told Michael. So he turned and headed for the hospital.

"I wasn't worried, because I knew there was an officer there," Amy said, "I was a little focused on other things."

While mom was delivering a little sister, Allie, Cuellar was delivering food and fun to 2-year-old Henry.

"I have four kiddos. I know the process of this, changed his diaper like I would anybody else, with permission. Gave him some breakfast (and) we played until grandpa got there," Cuellar said

Not what Cuellar expected when he started his shift that day. For his efforts, he was recognized by Christus Santa Rosa Hospital.

"You do what you need to do, and I would do it again any day," Cuellar said.
