KIRBY, Texas – Officials with VIA Metropolitan Transit and the city of Kirby on Friday announced the completion of key enhancements at several bus stops.
The improvements, which include solar-powered NextGen shelters and improved sidewalk access, were unveiled at a bus shelter in front of Kirby Baptist Church on Old Seguin Road.

Kirby is among the first in VIA's 14-member cities to feature solar-powered lights in nine new bus shelters, VIA president and CEO Jeffrey Arndt said.
A $500,000 federal grant funded the passenger and pedestrian amenities.
"We have a two-year program that we're about two-thirds of the way through ... Which will, in effect, increase the number of shelters compared to 1978 to 2012 by 100 percent," Arndt said.
The project also provides crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and connections, and bus-stopping pads within the roadway, Arndt said.
