Alternate locations to be considered

SAN ANTONIO – Capitol Park Little League is looking for a new home after the city recommended that the league's baseball fields not be built on McAllister Park.

City staff last week recommended to earmark $2 million from the city's proposed 2017 bond program for the new fields at the park.

Friends of McAllister Park, a group that opposed the move, gathered thousands of signatures for a petition that urged people to let the Parks and Recreation Community Bond Committee know that the group didn't want the baseball fields at the park because they would wipe out existing trails and wildlife habitats.

After hearing concerns from the community, city officials announced Tuesday that Capitol Park would not be allowed to relocate to McAllister Park.

Rob Foster, president of Capitol Park Little League, said that doesn't change the fact that the 500 families that currently use the park need somewhere to go.

Foster said bleachers need to be replaced, there are plumbing and electrical issues and dozens of lights in the field don't work.

"We've been here 50 years," Foster said. "The park is worn out. It's been a challenge for us to maintain and sustain just a safe place for the kids to play."

Rebuilding is not an option. Zachry Corporation, which owns the land, has been looking to expand, but has been waiting and working with the Little League organization as it tries to find a new facility.

District 10 City Councilman Mike Gallagher is scheduled to address concerns and to talk about alternate locations at a meeting behind held Tuesday night at the Capitol Park baseball fields.

Friends of McAllister Park also plan on attending the meeting. A member of the organization, Laura Matthews, said Tuesday that the group is pleased with the city's decision not to move the fields to McAllister Park.
