Career Point College students wait on defunct college's next move

College notifies students about release of affidavits of graduation

SAN ANTONIO – With nobody to contact or email, Career Point College students were still on edge Wednesday after the school's closing earlier this week.

On the Career Point College website, students were notified that the college will be releasing their affidavits of graduation to the Texas Board of Nursing on Wednesday and Thursday.

“The Directors of Nursing for both VN and RN programs in San Antonio, have been reviewing, and will be releasing, Affidavits of Graduation (AOGs) to the Texas Board of Nursing, on Wednesday, October 19th, and Thursday October 20th. As a reminder, it typically takes 24-48 hours for students to receive their AOG once it has been released by Career Point College.

Additionally, Career Point College is currently reviewing and auditing all current San Antonio campus students’ academic transcripts.”

For Crystal Segner, it's been two years this week since she started school at Career Point College. She had completed her classes and clinical hours at the end of April, but was unable to graduate because of the school's requirement to pass an NCLEX predictor, which she finally passed this past weekend.

"I actually just got what they refer to as a ‘green light’ on Saturday," Segner said. "I was going to be getting my Affidavit of Graduation this week, so I was done."

The next day, Career Point closed its doors for good.

"I did it in two years," Segner said. "I have three children. I didn't fail a class and then they close and now I'm left in the air going, ‘I don't know if mommy is going to be a nurse by Christmas, by next summer. I don't when it's going to happen.’”

Segner has been calling the State Board of Nursing, the State Board of Education and the federal government about her loans. All the agencies are waiting on Career Point's next move.

In the meantime, Segner helped created a Facebook page for students affected by the closure to share information and help each other out.

So far, the page has more than 1,100 students as members.

"Not knowing if they're going to send out our affidavits of graduation, not knowing how quickly that will happen has put my whole life on hold," Segner said.
