SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department confirmed to The Defenders Wednesday that Assistant Chief Joe Jones has been placed on administrative leave.

An SAFD spokesperson confirmed Jones was placed on leave Monday, but declined to release additional information.

The spokesperson said the department's decision is unrelated to the August removal of six cadets from the training academy.

KSAT anchor Steve Spriester spoke to SAFD Chief Charles Hood who said Jones' administrative leave is unrelated to the removal of the six cadets.

Four of the cadets resigned and two were terminated after meeting for lunch at a Northwest Side restaurant. The cadets contend they were out of uniform and had been dismissed from training for the day.

Multiple SAFD sources have criticized Jones for what they described as a "heavy-handed approach" to the incident.

Jones is listed on the city's website as the department's chief of staff and head of Firefighter Advancement, Safety & Training.
