HOUSTON – A man believed to be involved in Tuesday's shooting of two Houston police officers was shot and killed, authorities said.

The shooting was reported about 12:20 p.m. in the southwestern portion of the city.
Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said Officer Ronnie Cortez, a 24-year veteran of the department, was shot several times in the stomach and back. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with a bullet lodged near his spine. A doctor said Cortez's condition has improved since his arrival.
Officer Jose Munoz, a 10-year veteran of the department, was shot in the foot and leg, Acevedo said. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
The man was fatally wounded after he opened fire on officers who had opened a door to a back yard shed, Acevedo said. Residents had reported a burglary in progress in the area prior to the shooting.
Acevedo said officers are still searching for another person believed to be connected to the shooting.
