NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – When it comes to active shooter preparedness, emergency services departments can’t train enough. The Comal County Active Threat Response Committee on Monday conducted an active shooter exercise at Canyon High School.
“We’re planning for something we hope never does happen but the possibility that it could,” Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds said.
New Braunfels police, the Comal County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies took advantage of spring break to use Canyon High School to train for an active shooter situation.
“We've got students and parents from here at Canyon High School that are actually participants in the training. They're playing victims and everything else inside,” Reynolds said.
The first-time joint operation for the Comal County Active Threat Response Committee scenario was planned out to be as real as possible. After the training, officials will look at each agency’s performance and figure out what they need to do better.
“When all is said and done, you know, it's all being videotaped. It's all being monitored with the radio traffic, and we'll walk away from here knowing … we need to work on communications or we need to work on teams,” Reynolds said.
The plan is to have these types of training sessions once or twice a year.
