New Braunfels church members involved in Uvalde County crash; 12 killed, 3 injured

Highway 83 near Concan closed after fatal wreck

CONCAN, Texas – A group of seniors from the First Baptist Church in New Braunfels were involved in a crash in Uvalde County Wednesday afternoon, church officials confirmed.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed 12 people were killed and three others were injured.

The head-on crash between a pickup truck and a small van happened on Highway 83 near Garner State Park in Concan, Texas.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said multiple people were killed, with more injured. However, Uvalde County Fire Marshal Juan Hernandez said no official numbers will be released until the scene is cleared.

All lanes of the highway are closed between the park and Texas Highway 127 in Concan.

Church officials said the group was returning to New Braunfels from a Baptist encampment near Leakey, Texas, where they were attending a retreat.

All events at the church are cancelled Wednesday night, with the sanctuary to be open for prayer and support.
