SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Fire Department earned top honors Wednesday from a national insurance office.
The Insurance Service Office awarded the department a Class 1 public protection rating, the highest possible score possible.
The score is based on response times, personnel training, communications systems and equipment maintenance.
San Antonio is one of the few cities across the nation to achieve the ranking.
"Over 48,000 fire departments have been graded,” Chief Charles Hood said. “Only about 250 of those receive a class 1 certification."
The award also came on the same day Hood celebrated 10 years as chief.
