SAN ANTONIO – Economic interests and a chance at growth have the city of San Antonio looking to annex an area on the city’s South Side.

The annexation would include the Neal Road area, which includes 5.9 square miles north of South Loop 1604 East, just east of Applewhite Road, west of Pleasanton Road and south of Mauermann Road.

The city would like to protect sensitive lands and have zoning controls in the area along the Medina River. It would be a small annexation and city officials would like to have it done soon, but some residents are concerned.

"State law allows that if there's fewer than 100 rooftops, they call it, or homes in an area, you don't have to do a three-year process, basically,” Deputy City Manager Peter Zanoni said. “And so this area is small. There's less than 100 homes, so we can bring it into the city pretty quickly.”

The first public hearing on the annexation was held Wednesday.

The city will have a second hearing at 2 p.m. Thursday and then make a final decision June 22.
