Rescue group says dog wil need prostheses

SPRING, Texas – When an animal control facility in Texas picked up a stray pit bull missing her front paws, staffers  hoped the injuries were the result of a birth defect. On Thursday, the Texas Humane Society got the "horrific" news the dog's injuries were from abuse.

The pit bull, named Liberty, was up for adoption on the Montgomery County Animal Shelter website for a few hours on Wednesday before she was turned over to a temporary caregiver at the Texas Animal Society.

On Thursday, Liberty was taken to an animal hospital in Spring where veterinarians said she was in "very poor, emaciated condition."

The rescue said it expects Liberty to need at least a prosthesis and possibly amputation to deal with her injuries, but has some things working in her favor.

"Liberty is young at around a year old," a post on the Texas Animal Society said. "In her favor she is heartworm negative and young, with antibiotics, wound care and special booties she will be more comfortable."
