SA Zoo, SeaWorld working to save endangered, threatened species

Conservation efforts important to both organizations' missions

SAN ANTONIO – All around the world, there are animals and insects on the threatened or endangered species list. Many of those species find homes in zoos or animal sanctuaries.

In San Antonio, the San Antonio Zoo and SeaWorld do a lot of work to protect these animals.

SeaWorld San Antonio

Since its founding in 1964, the SeaWorld organization has rescued more than 29,000 animals, of all kinds of different species.

Besides educating the public about the animals, they do extensive conservation work and provide care for the animals too.

Whenever an animal is rescued, it is usually sent back into the wild, but sometimes it’s not in the animal's best interest to send it back, SeaWorld officials said.

These animals are then re-homed at a SeaWorld.

SeaWorld San Antonio showed two rescues (in video above) that have been a part of their family for many years.

San Antonio Zoo

The San Antonio Zoo has more than 200 endangered and/or protected species that they provide care for and help in their repopulation.

Not only are there endangered species from Texas at the zoo, but there are also other animals from around the world.

Zoo staff often travel abroad to help with conservation for the animals.
