SAN ANTONIO – On Friday, San Antonio police officer Miguel Moreno died from a gunshot wound to the head he sustained in a shootout with two suspects on Thursday.
Police Chief William McManus said Moreno and officer Julio Cavazos, 36, were working Central Patrol Thursday afternoon when they approached two men in the 200 block of Evergreen Street during an investigation into car burglaries. One of the men stopped while the other pulled a gun on the officers and started firing, ultimately striking Moreno in the head and Cavazos in the chin.

McManus said Cavazos dragged Moreno out of the line of fire and returned fire, striking the gunman in the buttocks. Investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shot that struck the gunman in the head, killing him.
Police have not yet released any information on the two men, but said the man that survived is no longer a suspect in the shooting and was cooperative with investigators, telling authorities they had come from Louisiana. The surviving man was arrested on outstanding warrants, but has since been released.
