Injured SAFD firefighter out of ICU, moved to private room

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio firefighter who was critically injured in a fatal fire at Ingram Square has been moved to a private room, fire officials said Wednesday.

Firefighter Brad Phipps no longer requires treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at San Antonio Military Medical Center and has started physical therapy, fire spokesman Joe Arrington said.

Phipps has undergone 19 surgeries since he was injured in the May fire that killed fellow firefighter Scott Deem and injured firefighter Robert Vasquez.

"The Phipps family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to the people of San Antonio for their amazing generosity, and they ask that we continue to pray for Brad's ongoing recovery," Arrington said.
