SAN ANTONIO – A big drainage project will help alleviate flooding in a trouble spot on the city's North Side and will also create a new green space for neighbors.

District 1 Councilman Roberto Trevino and community leaders celebrated the groundbreaking of the Barbara Drive drainage project Friday. This is the first phase of the $6.2 million project.

The improvements include widening and reconstructing the existing drainage system from McCullough Avenue to Basin Drive.

“This will keep people safe. It will keep houses from flooding. It will also hopefully set an example of how to tackle drainage issues throughout the city,” Trevino said.

The Barbara Drive drainage project is funded by the city’s stormwater regional facilities program and an inter-local agreement with Bexar County.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
