KARNES COUNTY, Texas – Before Hurricane Harvey makes its way toward the Alamo City, it will hit Karnes County, which is about an hour southeast of San Antonio. The small rural population of 15,000 is bracing for whatever the storm brings.
All it took was a heavy thunderstorm last year to flood some major roads in Karnes County. A man was trapped in the back of his pickup due to high waters.
“When (Harvey) comes in, we'll probably have a lot of heavy rain,” said Shelby Dupnik, emergency management coordinator.
Paula Rios said after one of the last hurricanes years ago, Falls City became an island.
“It was all water all across there. All around, it was scary,” she said.
Residents said the river backed up with the runoff from San Antonio. Evacuations near the bridge may be needed if it happens again on top of Harvey’s expected deluge.
With the threat of Harvey looming, officials are asking residents to avoid going out so crews have an easier time cleaning up after.
Karnes County has seen coastal evacuees come through to head to San Antonio. The county is joining the list of communities in Harvey’s path and is asking for a disaster declaration.
