Man convicted in execution-style killing gets 15 years in prison

William Porter killed man he suspected of kidnapping his daughter

SAN ANTONIO – A jury on Wednesday sentenced a 44-year-old man to 15 years in prison for the execution-style killing of a 23-year-old man he claimed kidnapped his daughter.

Jurors deliberated for six hours over a two-day period before deciding punishment for William Porter, who must serve seven years of his sentence before he's eligible for parole.

Prosecutors were seeking the maximum punishment of life in prison for Porter, who was found guilty of murder in the 2013 Christmas Day slaying of Trayvouns Edwards.

Porter claimed that he was rescuing his 20-year-old daughter after Edwards allegedly kidnapped her and held her captive for four days.

The defendant's wife said that she was "devastated and sad" by the sentence, but she didn't blame her husband for defending his daughter.

"My husband did what he needed to do to get his baby back, his only daughter, his baby," Lauren Porter said. "And given the opportunity again, I believe he would do it again."

The shooting was captured by security cameras at a Goliad Road gas station where the shooting occurred.

Porter called the slaying justified while prosecutors called it "an assassination."
