SAN ANTONIO – Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement Friday morning after an earthquake hit Mexico overnight.
In his statement, Gov. Abbott mentions how Texas will stand with Mexico during its time of need and offer whatever aid they are capable of.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake hit off Chiapas state near the Guatemalan border with a magnitude as 8.1 - equal in force to the 1985 quake that killed thousands and devastated large parts of Mexico City.

The USGS said the quake struck at 11:49 p.m. Thursday (12:49 a.m. EDT ; 0449 GMT Friday) and its epicenter was 102 miles (165 kilometers) west of Tapachula in Chiapas. It had a depth of 43.3 miles (69.7 kilometers).

"Our hearts go out to the victims of this devastating tragedy and their families. Just as Mexico stood with Texas in our time of need, Texas will stand with Mexico and offer whatever aid and assistance we can to help them recover after this disaster. I ask all Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for the victims and the people of Mexico this morning."
