Mother testifies in trial of son's accused killer

Antoinette Martinez on trial for capital murder

SAN ANTONIO – The mother of a man who was murdered testified in court that in her last communication with her son, she passed along a final bit of advice.

Testifying in the capital murder trial of Antoinette Martinez, 22, Cathy Chavez said that her son, Steven Rendon, 19, sent her a text in the early morning hours of June 25, 2014, saying that he would be out late.

“I responded by (saying), ‘Ok, please be careful and don’t do anything stupid,’” Chavez said.

Other texts she sent later that day went unanswered, she said.

Martinez and Cameo Clines, 20, are accused of luring Rendon to Martinez’s apartment, promising sex.

Instead, the couple is accused of robbing Rendon and stealing his car before taking him to a rural Bexar County pasture and shooting him to death execution style.

Five days earlier, the couple allegedly killed Xavier Cordero, 19, under identical circumstances.

As part of a plea agreement, Clines pleaded guilty to murder charges in the case in January 2016. He is serving two life sentences.

If she is convicted, Martinez faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Testimony is expected to continue Monday in Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl’s 175th District Court.
