SAN ANTONIO – A Canadian man who reportedly admitted on Reddit that he killed a woman, used a messaging app to talk to police and posted his intention to "end the dark path" of life on the run sits in a San Antonio jail cell waiting to learn if he'll be sent back to Canada to face a second-degree murder charge.
Ager Mohsin Hasan, 24, was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service on July 11 by agents who were reportedly investigating a counterfeit scheme. The agents later learned Hasan was wanted for the murder charge.
Hasan was named a suspect days after the April 28 murder of Melinda Vasilije. She was found dead at her home in Kitchener, Canada, stabbed several times in the chest and neck. A knife was found near her body.
Police believe Hasan posted to Reddit, a news and web content aggregating site and discussion platform. The widely reported post, which was made on May 2 and later removed, described the killing as a case of self-defense. Court records said Hasan also posted excerpts of a text exchange between himself and Vasilije.
Hasan and Vasilije dated for about a year and broke up sometime before April 3. Hasan was accused of breaking into Vasilije's home, where he assaulted her roommate and her brother. Hasan was told by a justice of the peace that he could not communicate with the victims and Vasilije, among others. Police said cellphone records show that after that incident, Hasan sent text messages to Vasilije and contacted her through social media.
Court records said Hasan went to Vasilije's home the night she was killed.
"(Text messages) show arrangements being made between Vasilije and Hasan for him to come to her address and that he was outside waiting for her roommates to leave," one document said.
The roommates discovered Vasilije dead in the early-morning hours of April 28.
Investigators said Vasilije's cellphone contained a message from Hasan, received after her death, that said, "Nice seeing tonight glad we worked things out!"
Police said Hasan was in contact with them on WhatsApp Messenger, telling them on May 7 that he wanted to turn himself in, but "he wanted investigators to offer him a plea deal first. He has stated several times in these communications that he does not want to be arrested by US law enforcement."
While he was still a wanted man, Hasan also took to Instagram. In one July 10 post, he wrote:
"You were always one step ahead of me on the contributions to our relationship. You wanted kids, marriage and to start a family but I wasn't ready. I kept holding it off and wanted to give it more time. Your love for me was beyond my comprehension and I needed time to understand why it was there. The fights and arguments we got into were about miniscule things, but I would always tell you to tell me if something was on your mind, talk and not hold it in, you never did that. You would always hold things in and lash out after an extended period of time. Communication is what led to the downfall of us. I hope justice is served and punishment is given accordingly to what happened that night."
He made another post that same day.
"I'm coming home. It's time to end the dark path I've been traveling and give people the closure they deserve"
Hasan didn't make it back home. Instead, he was arrested in San Antonio by the Secret Service.
The U.S. Attorney's Office is asking a judge to extradite Hasan to Canada. While a decision on that is pending, Hasan is being held without bail.
