Father charged after he runs from crash, leaves injured daughter behind

Jose Orellana, 38, arrested on a charge of failure to stop and render aid

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police have arrested a man they say ran from the scene of a crash and left his injured five-year-old daughter behind.

38-year-old Jose Orellana has been taken into custody on a charge of failure to stop and render aid.

According to police, Orellana lost control of his pickup truck on Blanco Road before tumbling onto Loop 1604 and landing upside down on Sunday night.

A witness told police they saw Orellana try to leave the scene with his five-year-old daughter, but that he eventually ran off without her.

Police said they tracked down the girl's mother who told them she had left the child with Orellana.

Police said a few hours later they answered a call a few miles away about an injured man. When they arrived, officers said Orellana told them he had been hurt in a bar fight.

Investigators said Orellana later admitted that the bar fight wasn't true and that his injuries came from the vehicle crash.

Orellana told authorities he ran from the scene because he had been drinking but he insisted he did check on his daughter first -- and that he had left her in the care of the witness.
