SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are once again urging people to think about their safety when meeting other people to sell things online.
2 teens shot at North Side apartment complex
Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, two teenagers went to meet two men at the Urbana apartment complex after agreeing to buy a necklace that was for sale on the Offer-Up website.
"These gentleman went out there to sell this gold necklace that was his, and in turn, these people steal it from him. At that point, the friend shot at the juvenile males," San Antonio police Officer Carlos Ortiz said.
The boys, ages 14 and 15, ran with the necklace but both were shot in their legs, police said.
"They were taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were released to the hospital, and charges will be pending for theft," Ortiz said.
This isn't the first time police say they have seen online deals gone wrong -- and they say there are ways to avoid the violence.
"It's a great source for information, but you never really know who you are dealing with on the internet. One thing, SAPD offers is safe exchange zones at each substation, six substations and headquarters," Ortiz said.
Each of the buildings are monitored 24/7 and police are available if anything happens. According to the penal code -- people have the right to use deadly force to protect their property. As for the man who shot at the teens, police said he had a right to open fire.
Police said they are still investigating, but, as of now, the only ones facing charges are the teens.
