Stowaway critically injured after falling off 18-wheeler

Victim tried to enter cab while truck was in motion, BCSO says

SAN ANTONIO – A man who was among three stowaways on a tractor-trailer suffered massive head injuries after he fell off an 18-wheeler and onto Interstate 37 early Thursday, Bexar County Sheriffs Officials said.

Deputies said the driver was traveling on the interstate when he heard a knock on the window of his cab.

To the driver's surprise, the man was outside the cab, trying to get into the 18-wheeler, BCSO officials said.

The driver didn't stop because his family was riding with him and called 911, BCSO officials said.

Deputies caught up with the truck around 1:40 a.m. near the intersection of I-37 South and South Presa Street.

Two of the stowaways were found between the cab and the trailer, deputies said.

One of them, a woman, ran off, but deputies caught up with her, officials said. She isn't cooperating with investigators, officials said.

The man who fell off the big rig was found lying on the side of the road, deputies said. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

Officials believe the three people got on the 18-wheeler at a truck stop a half-mile away from the scene without the driver's knowledge.
