SAN ANTONIO – As the post-Christmas afterglow begins to fade, many people are left with a serious conundrum: How to safely dispose of a dried-out Christmas tree.
Old trees are a dangerous fire hazard and shouldn't just be left on the curb outside your house.

The City of San Antonio has some tips on how you can safely turn your old Christmas tree into mulch.
First remove all lights and decorations and take it out of its stand. If the tree is tall than 6 feet, cut it in half. Do not bag the tree.
Then, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 6 and 7, and on Jan. 13 and 14, bring it to one of the drop-off locations listed below:

- Southside Drop-Off Center 5450 Castroville Road, 78227

- Northwest District Center 6802 Culebra Road, 78238
- Nelson Gardens* 8963 Nelson Road, 78252
- Eisenhower Park 19399 NW Military Highway, 78257
- Stone Oak Park 20395 Stone Oak Parkway, 78258
* If you cannot make the above dates, the Bitters Brush and Nelson Gardens locations are open every day from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and will accept trees the entire month of January. You may also compost a real Christmas tree by placing it in your green organics cart. Larger trees may require trimming to fit loosely in the cart with the lid closed.

No live wreaths, garlands, or plants will be accepted.
Free mulch
Approximately one to two weeks after each of these events, Christmas tree mulch will be available at the Bitters Brush and Nelson Gardens locations for FREE while supplies last
