Police now say 1 dead, 2 critical in South Side collision

SAN ANTONIOEditor's Note: This report previously stated two people had died in the crash. A sergeant at the scene said two people died in the accident, but on Sunday morning, SAPD spokesperson Ramona Lopez listed only one death. The Medical Examiner's Office also reported one death.

One person is dead and two people are in critical condition after a head-on crash on the South Side.

The crash happened Saturday night on Highway 16 and South Zarzamora Street.

Officials at the scene said the driver of a white pickup truck was traveling north on Highway 16 when it lost a tire, causing the driver to lose control. The pickup veered into the median and entered the southbound lane of Highway 16, either hitting a Ford Explorer head-on or landing on top of it.

San Antonio police said there were three people in each vehicle. The driver of the explorer, identified as 25-year-old Erson Mendez, was killed in the crash. Two others in the Explorer were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said the driver of the truck will not face any charges.
