FALLS CITY, Texas – A minor earthquake has shaken parts of rural South Texas.
The U.S. Geological Survey said that a 3.1 magnitude earthquake was reported at 8:24 a.m. Monday centered about 4 miles southeast of Falls City, in Karnes County.
The area is about 50 miles southeast of San Antonio.
The Karnes County Sheriff's Office had no immediate reports Monday of anyone hurt or potential damage.
Sheriff Dwayne Villenueva said he's noticed more quakes in the area the past five to seven years.
"A lot of the times, I think maybe now with the fracking going on in Karnes County, that may have something to do with it, I don't know. We've just seen a lot. In that area where the caller is, they are fracking right now," Villanueva said.
Villanueva said he meets with area oil companies quarterly to get updates from them on their work.
A USGS map (see below) showed four minor earthquakes in the area last month.
