San Antonio ranked one of the most dangerous cities in the nation

National Council for Home Safety and Security releases 2018 Texas rankings

SAN ANTONIO – The National Council for Home Safety and Security has released its list of safest cities in Texas for 2018.

The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes.

The top five all are suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth area with the safest being Colleyville, a Fort Worth suburb. Violent crimes there are 26 times lower than the statewide average.

So where does San Antonio rank on the list? Out of the 224 cities listed the Alamo City ranked 215.

The San Antonio Police Department's Public Information Office released the following statement about the city's rank:

"San Antonio, like many large cities across the nation saw a dramatic and unexplained rise in violent crime in 2016. In 2017, San Antonio had a 6% decline in the most serious crimes and a 16% decline in murders. That downward trend in violent crimes and murders has continued into the early part of 2018.  City to city comparisons solely using statistics can be misleading and data such as UCR statistics are not designed to be used to rank cities as there are too many variables to be considered when analyzing crime data. There are additional complications when comparing large cities to smaller municipalities. San Antonio is one of the safest big cities in the country."

The list did have a couple of cities in the surrounding area rank in the top 100, with Cibolo ranked the highest at number 17. Fredericksburg was ranked number 48 and Schertz was ranked number 69.
