City dedicates Jones Maltsberger bridge to fallen soldier

Sgt. 1st Class David J. Todd Jr. namesake for bridge near his childhood home

SAN ANTONIO – A fallen soldier's memory will live on with the naming of a bridge in his honor near his childhood home.

Family and friends gathered Saturday morning for the dedication of "SFC David James Todd Jr. Memorial Bridge" along Jones Maltsberger Road between Oakline Drive and Old Trail Street.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class David James Todd Jr. was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 20, 2008, nearly a decade ago to the day.

His sister, Stephanie Kindvall, said the family, especially her mother, had worked for years to get the bridge named after Todd.

"Whether it was work, school or even to help build a church down the street, this was David's home. This is his resting place," Kindvall said.

The bridge over the Salado Creek is near both Todd's childhood home in the Burning Tree Subdivision and McAllister Park, where the family had many happy memories of Todd.

"My parents, they actually moved further out of town, but when they come to this side of town, they purposely will drive across this bridge, and I'm sure even more so now with the naming," Kindvall said.
