BOERNE, Texas – Authorities pulled a body from Boerne Lake Monday morning after a kayaker was reported missing Sunday.
Boerne Police Lt. Cody Lackey said 42-year-old Benito Cantu was reported missing around 6 p.m. Sunday.
According to Lackey, Cantu was at Boerne Lake with his family when he and his son went out for a ride on their kayaks. Police said they went to a creek that feeds into Boerne Lake and that Cantu's son was traveling in front of Cantu.
Cantu was reported missing when his son returned to the lake shore and he didn't. Hours later, Cantu's kayak and personal items were discovered. Authorities stopped searching for Cantu at 11 p.m. and returned to Boerne Lake Monday morning.
Police said they received assistance from Texas Parks and Wildlife and that officials scanned the body of water using sonar equipment Monday morning.
Lackey said they found Cantu's body approximately 100 yards away from where his family was. His body was recovered by the Boerne Fire Department's dive team.
Police said Cantu was not wearing a life vest when he was found and provided the following water safety tips:
- Have a flotation device when in the water
- Use the buddy system when out on water in case someone flips or needs to be rescued
