SAN ANTONIO – A proposed city charter amendment debate between Mayor Ron Nirenberg and San Antonio Professional Firefighter's Association President Chris Steele will not be happening.
KSAT 12 invited Nirenberg and Steele to debate the charter amendments next week at our studios and gave them a deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday to respond.

The mayor accepted our invitation on Sept. 25. Steele never confirmed. KSAT announced the debate proposal on Sept. 27.
The three charter amendments, which will be on the Nov. 6 ballot, would ease the current requirements for voters to change or overturn decisions made by the City Council, set term limits and a salary cap for a future city manager and would allow the firefighters’ union to unilaterally declare an impasse at any time in their contract negotiations with the city.
