Arson ruled; up to $10,000 reward offered in fatal San Marcos apartment fire

5 people killed in July fire at Iconic Village, Vintage Pad apartments

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A fire that killed five people at an apartment complex in San Marcos in July was intentionally set, officials said at a news conference Friday.

Officials also announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to arrests in the fire at the Iconic Village and Vintage Pad apartment complexes.

The number to call to submit a tip is 1-888-ATF-TIPS or 1-888-283-8477.

"We've brought together the best experts in the country. Our team came from all over the country, and the relationship that we have with the fire department gives us the best chance of solving this case. But we do need information from the public, and that's why we're announcing this reward today," said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Special Agent in Charge Fred Milanowski.

Officials said they know where the fire originated but they're not ready to release that information.

"Investigators here know where it was set, and they know how it was set, and obviously either individual or multiple individuals that were there that set it also know that information. And we're the only ones -- the individuals that set it and us -- who know that. So that's why we're going to keep that information close to the vest for this investigation," Milanowski said.

Four of the five victims were students or former students at Texas State University.

About 200 people were displaced as a result of the fire.
