The clerk's sister said trying to stop a robber is something her brother would do.

"I’m sure my brother didn’t do this just out of a whim. He did it to help somebody else. He probably did it because he felt for the owner, or he thought maybe was going to be able to save the day," said Mary DeLuna.

Collins died at University Hospital. The gunman was last seen running toward the highway, police said.

Authorities described the gunman as a 6-foot-tall man wearing a hoodie.

Police continue to investigate.
