Fire destroys unoccupied home on North Side

Fire reported around 1:30 a.m. at 1400 block of West Hermine Blvd.

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters extinguished heavy flames at an empty North Side home early Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported just before 1:30 a.m. at the home in the 1400 block of West Hermine Boulevard, which is located not far from Interstate 10 and San Pedro Avenue.

Firefighters said when they arrived they found the flames inside most of the house.

"When we arrived there was an active fire in the house. Initially we went defensive until it was safe to go inside. The fire was knocked down quickly but it was a relatively strong fire," said San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Woody Woodward.

Authorities said the house is presently unoccupied and that it was actually neighbors who called in the fire after noticing it.

"Arson did tell me they went into inspect the home but the damage was so heavy that they could not determine where the source of the fire originated so theyve closed it out as undetermined," Woodward said.

The structure will be evaluated later today by the city to determine if it  will have to be demolished.
