Pearsall police: 'Intoxicated' man shoots ex-wife's boyfriend, sparks hourslong standoff

Shooting victim suffers non-life-threatening injuries

PEARSALL, Texas – An hours-long standoff Monday in Pearsall ended with a man in police custody.

Police said Juan Nick Garcia, 56, fired a shotgun blast through a bedroom window at his ex-wife's home around 4:45 a.m., wounding the woman's current boyfriend, then went to his home and barricaded himself in the home, prompting a large law enforcement presence.

Pearsall Police Chief Pedro Salinas said Garcia's ex-wife was not hurt and her new boyfriend suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Salinas said the couple called 911 after hearing dogs barking. Garcia had been harassing the couple for some time and had a no-trespassing order against him, Salinas said. He described the incident as a "lovers'-type quarrel."

After Garcia fled the scene, police found his car at his house, where he was holed up, Salinas said.

Texas Department of Public Safety negotiators, a tactical team and the Pearsall Police Department were dispatched to the home, and Garcia came out after an hourslong standoff, according to police.

Salinas said Garcia appeared to be intoxicated and slipped outside the doorway of the home due to the rainy conditions, allowing officers to utilize non-lethal force to get him into custody.

Authorities said Garcia is facing a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal trespass and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Garcia is also charged with with being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon. Court records show Garcia was convicted in 2014 of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years of age.
