Teen, SAPD officer involved in gun battle on NW Side

Suspect in critical condition; Officer Drew Matthewson released from hospital

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio police officer and a teenager suffered gunshot wounds after they exchanged gunfire at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning on the city's Northwest Side, Police Chief William McManus said.

The teenager was listed in critical condition at University Hospital. The officer, identified as Officer Drew Matthewson, a one-year veteran of the force, was released after being treated at the hospital.

McManus said Matthewson spotted, followed and tried to pull over a vehicle that was connected to a shooting over the weekend when the driver took off and crashed through the gates of the Chroma Apartments in the 5000 block of Hamilton Wolfe.

The suspect ran on foot and waited for Matthewson, McManus said.

"He (suspect) hid behind a wall when the officer hit the end of the corridor, he shot the officer in the upper chest, shoulder. The officer returned fire and struck the suspect, I believe, twice. The suspect went down."

McManus said Matthewson did a "fantastic job of catching the suspect" and that it "very nearly cost him his life."

Matthewson will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, per department protocol.

The teenager will be charged with attempted capital murder, police said.
