HDRC approves design for Woodlawn Lake multi-generational center to replace historic dance studio

Construction expected to be completed by 2022

The San Antonio Historic Design and Review Commission approved the design this week for the new building that will replace the historic Berta Almaguer Dance Studio.

The architectural design of the building is consistent with the current building’s mid-century style. The plan will keep the chimney and incorporate a tribute to Almaguer.

In 1934, Berta Almaguer started teaching music and dance as a job with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. A studio named after her was opened in the 1950s.

Alejandro Soto, president of the Woodlawn Lake Community Association, said he welcomes the new center.

“It’s more than just for the community. It’s for the city," he said. “You’ll have a facility now that can really accommodate more students, and we’ll have something that’ll last into the future.”

Soto said the current dance studio is in poor condition, with plumbing and roof problems and cracking issues.

Some people were resistant to see the demolition because they felt the studio had some historical significance, but the demolition was approved in July.

The new multi-generational center will include a dance studio and meeting rooms, along with improvements to the walking trail. Construction could begin by fall 2020, and it is expected to be completed by 2022.

Chimney bricks and wood ceiling will be salvaged and reused for the new center. The studio floor and ballet bars will also be used at another studio.

Now that the design has been approved, the process of selecting a contractor will take about nine months, according to the city. Once the City Council approves the contract, the demolition and construction can begin.

The project will cost roughly $6.5 million. $5 million will come from a 2017 bond approved by voters and $1.5 million will come from a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant.

Dance classes held at the Berta Almaguer Dance Studio will be moved to the Enrique Barrera Fitness Center during construction.
