SAN ANTONIO – An East Side family that lost everything in a fire on Sterling Drive just days before Christmas got some good news on Monday.
After KSAT'S story aired on Sunday night, Any Baby Can stepped up to help Brittany Johnson; her husband, Thomas Woodard; and their two young children not only with things they need right now, but also with long-term needs for their oldest son.
"I've been looking for help ever since I found out that he had autism," said Johnson. "And when she called me, it lightened up my day. She said she would be able to help me."
"We're happy that we're able to provide some toys for Christmas so, the kids can have a good Christmas," said Hugo Hernandez, president and CEO of Any Baby Can. "We got them some gift cards so they can purchase some things that they need right now, but then we'll connect them to the rest of our services because we did find out the child has autism. We want to make sure that they are able to access our services."
The parents believe their oldest son, who is autistic, started the fire by playing with a space heater and that while they do keep a close eye on him around the clock, it only took a few seconds for things to go wrong.
"I don't think he's going to ever realize what happened," Johnson said. "It's just the way they operate. So it's not their fault. I can't do nothing but love him."
The family will be meeting with a case manager this week.
