Commissioners looking at way to reduce crowding at Bexar County jail

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Sheriff's Office and county commissioners are looking for ways to reduce crowding at the jail.

BCSO officials said they are at capacity right now with 4,400 inmates housed at the jail.

That number is up more than 600 – or 16 percent -- since the beginning of the year.

Jail officials said they are now transferring inmates to Karnes County, based on population and classification issues.

In an effort to reduce crowding, the Bexar County Commissioner approved adding hours in the afternoon to process inmates with misdemeanors more quickly to save space.
