Converse police expect more arrests in 16-year-old boy's shooting death

David Louis Martinez charged in connection with killing of Reginald Adams

CONVERSE, Texas – Converse police said they expect to make as many as two more arrests in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy.

Police took David Louis Martinez, 30, into custody late Sunday on outstanding warrants. He was later charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Reginald "Reggie" Adams.

The teen was gunned down in the parking lot of the Town Square Apartments around 1 p.m. Sunday, moments after he left home, police said.

"It was a deal between multiple people, set up to buy narcotics. And during that time frame is when guns were produced," said Capt. Robert Avella of the Converse Police Department.

Avella said Martinez confessed to the crime, telling them that the deal turned into a robbery which ended with Adams being shot.

"We've seen drug-deal homicides before, but they're typically in the adult stages, not necessarily in the juvenile, 16 year olds," Avella said.

Witnesses and surveillance cameras are getting credit for helping police make the quick arrest.

Avella said several people reported seeing a red four-door Dodge leaving the scene and cameras told them the rest.

"The video surveillance at the apartment complex was reviewed, and we were able to get the license plate," Avella said.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the car is registered to Martinez. The affidavit said investigators set up surveillance on the vehicle, which they ended up stopping somewhere along Interstate 35, north of the San Antonio city limits.

"Schertz, Selma Police Department and Bexar County (Sheriff's Office) were involved as well," Avella said.

The car had bullet holes in the windshield and what appeared to be blood inside when police stopped it.

Avella said Martinez later led investigators to an area where he had hidden two guns, one of which is believed to be the murder weapon.

He said it appears there were several people inside the car at the time of the murder. Investigators are still working to identify them.
