Officer in Edgewood ISD student sex case identified

Manuel Hernandez, Jr., 56, charged with sexual assault of a child

No description found

A former officer with the Edgewood Independent School District's police department identified as Manuel Hernandez, Jr., 56, has been named in an arrest warrant affidavit as the second suspect in a sex case involving a student.

The affidavit stated that a teenage girl, who already had made claims about having a relationship with a teacher at Memorial High School, told investigators she also had sex with Hernandez.

The girl, who was 15 at the time, said the incident happened in December of last year at Hernandez's on-campus office.

The affidavit stated that she said she began going to Hernandez during her freshman year for help with personal problems.

She said he eventually gave her his personal email address, asking that she send him erotic pictures of herself, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit stated that later, Hernandez began suggesting they "do it" in return for all of the favors he had done for her, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit stated that the teen, saying she "felt no way out," went to Hernandez's office one day last December and had sex with him. After that, she said, she purposely avoided him on campus.

The Texas Rangers were asked on March 28 to take over the investigation.

In response to the newest claims, the Edgewood ISD released a statement Monday. It stated, in part, that:

"Edgewood's dedication to student safety is absolute and the district wishes to assure the public that the actions of two individuals do not reflect the values of the overwhelming majority of EISD employees, whose commitment to the health and safety of its students is total. Let it be known that Edgewood will not tolerate conduct that violates employee-student boundaries; individuals who break that public trust will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible."

The statement also said that Edgewood ISD is providing ongoing support to the victim and her family.

In the affidavit, investigators with the Texas Rangers said they questioned Hernandez and he admitted that he did share his email address with the girl.

However, he refused to answer any questions about having sex with the teen, the affidavit stated.
