SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio is celebrating Diez y Seis de Septiembre this weekend with events around town.

Friday's holiday marks the 206th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain.

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla initiated the fight for Mexico's freedom On Sept. 16, 1810,  with a cry known in Spanish as a "grito." He is seen by many as the father of Mexico's independence.

The city of San Antonio established the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission in 1994.

You can observe the holiday this weekend at the following free events:

  • 8 p.m. Friday: Bravo Mi Cultura Diez y Seis performance, Arneson River Theatre
  • Noon Saturday: 35th annual Avenida Guadalupe Parade and Festival, 1327 Guadalupe

The parade will feature food booths, entertainment and live tejano, conjunto, and mariachi music.
